We call a verb the finite verb form (persoonsvorm) if it shows:
– in which time the sentence is written (present or past): I sleep – i slept (Ik slaap – ik sliep)
– whether the subject is singular or plural: you sleep – you sleep (jij slaapt – jij sliep)
Verb forms such as cycled (gefietst), bought (gekocht), happened (gebeurd) and distributed (gedistribueerd). are called past participles (voltooide deelwoorden).
Walking (lopend), working, (werkend) drinking (drinkend) and rolling (rollend) are called present participles (onvoltooide deelwoorden).
Infinitives are the whole verbs (hele werkwoorden).
