{"id":252,"date":"2017-05-03T08:30:58","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T08:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dutch4u.nl\/?page_id=252"},"modified":"2023-04-22T14:59:14","modified_gmt":"2023-04-22T14:59:14","slug":"predicat","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dutch4u.nl\/?page_id=252","title":{"rendered":"Predicat &#8211; gezegde"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"252\" class=\"elementor elementor-252\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-47dbf092 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"47dbf092\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-62723bd\" data-id=\"62723bd\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c97ab61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3c97ab61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><b>The (nominal \/ verbal ) predicate<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Every sentence contains a verbal (\u201cwerkwoordelijk\u201d) or nominal (\u201cnaamwoordelijk\u201d) predicate.<\/span><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The verbal predicate contains nothing but <a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cambiumned.nl\/grammaticawoordsoorten.htm#werkwoorden\">verbs<\/a>:<\/span><\/li><\/ol><ul><li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A finite form: Hij <em><u>maakt<\/u><\/em> de opgave (He <em>does<\/em> the exercise).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A finite form and one or more other verbs: Hij <em><u>zou<\/u><\/em> de opgave <em>gemaakt hebben.<\/em> (He <em>would have done<\/em> the exercise.)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Please note:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&#8211; When dealing with a split verb, both parts of the verb belong to the predicate:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0Houd<\/em> direct <u><em>op<\/em><\/u> met dat stomme gelach!<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0 \u00a0(Stop the stupid laughing immediately!)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>&#8211; Sometimes a verb is a reflexive<\/strong><strong> verb.<br \/><\/strong>The Dutch verb \u2018Vergissen\u2019 for example (to mistake) cannot be used without a pronoun: <em>Ik vergis me, wij<\/em><em>vergissen ons<\/em> etc. The pronoun is then a part of the predicate.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Sometimes the reflexive pronoun can be replaced by another word \u2013 the pronoun is then a part of the object: <em>Hij wast zich (He washes himself). <\/em><em>Hij wast haar (He washes her). (zich\/haar = direct object.)<br \/><\/em><strong>&#8211; \u2018te\u2019 (\u2018to\u2019) in the infinitive form is always a part of the predicate<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>Example:<\/em><em><br \/><\/em>He is trying to whistle.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">trying to whistle = verbal predicate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/dutch4u.nl\/?qsm_quiz=oefening-werkwoordelijk-gezegde\">Exercise <\/a><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/dutch4u.nl\/?qsm_quiz=oefening-werkwoordelijk-gezegde\">verbal predicate <\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DEXExlcypqY?rel=0\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">2.The nominal predicate consists out of a verbal part and a nominal part.<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4054988611799892\" data-ad-slot=\"8543053603\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Coppula<br \/><\/strong>The nominal predicate <u>always<\/u> contains a coppula. In Dutch, the coppulas are: zijn, worden, heten, blijven, schijnen, lijken, blijken, dunken en voorkomen.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The verbal part consists out of:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A coppula<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A coppula and one or more other verbs<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The nominal part is the part that is linked to the subject by the coppula. Therefor, it\u2019ll always tell you something about the subject.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Example:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">De wedstrijd werd een mislukking.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">(The match became a disaster.)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">werd een mislukking \/ became a disaster is the nominal predicate; werd = verbal part and coppula;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">een mislukking = nominal part and tells something about the subject: the match was a disaster.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Many copullas may also be used as a normal verb in the verbal part of the predicate<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">1a. De man schijnt eerlijk.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">(The man seems to be fair)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">schijnt eerlijk = nominal predicate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">schijnt =\u00a0 verbal part<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">eerlijk = nominal part<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">1b. De man schijnt met een schijnwerper.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">(The man is shining with a spotlight.)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">In this sentence \u2019schijnen\u2019 has a different meaning than in 1a: it no longer means \u2018to seem\u2019 but now means \u2018to shine\u2019, and is no longer a coppula.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">schijnt = verbal predicate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u2019met een schijnwerper\u2019 doesn\u2019t say a thing about the subject (the man)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">2a. Mijn vader is vijftig jaar.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">(My father is fifty years of age)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">is vijftig jaar\u00a0 = nominal predicate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">is\u00a0 = verbal part<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">vijftig jaar = nominal part<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">2b.
